There are few new technologies in dispensing systems, according to Robert Du Grenier of Robert Du Grenier Associates, Townshend, VT. Du Grenier said, "There's definitely a trend to dress up or disguise the pump but the way most of them work is essentially the same."

The changes in today's market are more influenced by finances than anything else, according to Robert Du Grenier of Robert Du Grenier Associates, a packaging design company based in Townshend, VT. "Totally custom projects seem to be on hold while there are more assignments to take an existing bottle and give it a custom look with decoration or components," Du Grenier said, adding, "The looks are more pure and simple—less signature."

A designer who specializes in glass sculpture, Robert Du Grenier founded the design studio Robert Du Grenier Associates Inc. (Townshend, VT) in 1980 and has designed primary and secondary packaging for such high-profile names as Laura Mercier, Susan Lucci's Invitation and La Lucci fragrances, Mark Cross Embrace, Nautica Competition, and Fabergé.

The beauty segment took off in the fall 2004 with new projects, according to Robert Du Grenier of design firm Robert Du Grenier Associates, New York and Townshend, VT. "Traditionally, beauty packaging made up 40 to 60% of our business, but for most of 2003, it was only about 10%.
