Dr. Karen Greer , St. Barnabas Hospital , on a new literacy program : The focus of the program is to use a child visit , when they're coming in for vaccines , blood work , and etc. , as a springboard for promoting literacy.Over the course of the next year , all the clinics - St. Barnabas Hospital , Fordham Plaza , the new center at 149th Street , the 2021 Grand Concourse site - will have the program instituted and all the pediatricians will use it.We currently have volunteers reading to the children in the waiting room.It captures their attention , introduces them to a book , and gets them excited about reading.Just bringing the book out to show to the child , there's a look of wonder and excitement on their faces and the parent sees that , opens the book and starts to read to the child.
