Jane Greenwald, diversity executive recruiter, Battalia Winston InternationalMs.Greenwald, 61, helps companies seeking a diverse slate of candidates for executive-level job openings. She says her job is similar to other recruiters' work, but it can be more difficult because the talent pool is typically narrower.
Ms. Greenwald, who works in Edison, N.J. and is a partner at her firm, says she juggles about five to seven searches at a time. She searches for qualified talent by reviewing a candidate database she developed and by networking with executive groups for minorities, women, gays and others.
Her job requires patience and sensitivity, says Ms. Greenwald. One challenge is addressing candidates' concerns about diversity issues, she says."It can be positive for a candidate to know a company is doing the right thing in wanting their senior levels to be diverse, but they don't want that to be the reason they're hired," she says.
Ms. Greenwald, who has been in recruiting for more than 20 years and with Battalia Winston about seven, says she developed a niche in diversity early in her career. She did this by making a conscious effort to present her clients with a diverse slate of candidates. She learned about the hurdles that minorities face in landing jobs when she was a work-study coordinator at Bloomfield College in New Jersey prior to becoming a recruiter, she says.
"Diversity is just something I have always been very passionate about," Ms. Greenwald says.
