The book's subtitle is "The Art of the Possible," and her mom Carla and dad Hank Greenwald, retired play-by-play announcer for the San Francisco Giants, say it is a testimony to how far such a person can go, given early treatment.

Doug has been "very good with her," says father Hank."When they were young, he would needle her, and her need to respond really helped her develop speech."He emphasizes the need for early stimulation and training.

    Hank Greenwald returns

Hank Greenwald is the greatest baseball announcer I've ever heard. He retired from the Giants after the 1996 season, a sad day for those who love smart, witty broadcasting.Even though the Giants got the best possible replacement in Jon Miller, I still miss Hank.
    ...
Hank loved being on the radio (vs. TV), which led to his great skill in describing the action.

Now comes the story that the A's have hired Hank as their lead TV broadcaster for about half their games, replacing Greg Papa, who's gone to work with the Giants.
    ...
This is bittersweet for me. I'm glad I'll be able to listen to Hank. But the Giants screwed it up by not hiring him, which saddens me.And, Hank is just not as good on TV, because he can't talk as much.

One of Hank's great strengths is his self-deprecating wit. There are three examples in the story:

"I've had seven years off between starts," Greenwald said."I should be well rested."

Greenwald said his return to broadcasting "lends great hope to those who have been waiting for Ted Williams."

[Commenting on his backup announcers, who are much younger than he is:] Greenwald said the A's were wise to hire two men considerably younger than he is."Yeah, suppose I lose my walker."

Hank once called a triple play as it was happening. His calm presence of mind led him to say "We could have a triple play" while calling the play, after the first out was recorded. It was amazing.
    ...
Hank used to slip in fake scores, including the following:
    ...
    Welcome back, Hank.
    ...
Hank may have been a good radio announcer for SF Giants but A's lost a great TV announcer in Greg Papa.
    ...
Hank will adjust his style for TV and for the A's.He won't mention his time with the Giants. But if you're a Papa fan, you're bound to be disappointed in Hank.

Although I like the Giants announcers, having Hank Greenwald and Bill King makes me envy A's fans.
    ...
I have always been a Giants fan but hearing Hank is like a visit from an old friend.
    ...
Good ole Hank could hardly contain himself.I feel that if you are going to announce you need to like the team you announce or you don't do them justice.GET Rid Of the Bum.He really upsets me.He hasn,t been positive much for the A's the whole season so far.GET RID OF THE BUM..
    ...
But what does Sheffield homering for the Yankees have to do with Hank being "in love with Barry Bonds and the SF Giants"?
    ...
Hank Greenwald is the best baseball annoucer I have ever heard and I have been following baseball for over thirty years.I remember when Jon Miller broke in with the A's back in the 1970's and he is still not as good as Hank Greenwald. The A's are damn lucky to have Hank Greenwald.Hank gets excited about the game of baseball period, no matter who is playing. He would get excited about home-runs and great plays by opposing teams when he was with the Giants. That is Hank's style.I did not exactly appreciate that every time then, yet that is Hank's style and it is very good for the game.Hank it is very good to have you back and to hear you again.Keep up the good work.

As an 18 year old having grown up around baseball, (my dad loved listening to games on the radio,) I often find myself enjoying the commentary on a game more than the game its self. While I wasn't around to hear Hank while he was with the Giants and I love listening to Jon broadcast, there is just nothing like an announcer who was brought up on radio and has a genuine love of the game.Keep up the good work, Hank, you bring the joy of baseball to all your listeners and fans.

The Menlo Park, Calif., native grew up listening to legendary San Francisco Giants announcer Hank Greenwald. While in college at nearby California, he volunteered at the student radio station and began calling Cal baseball games.

After graduation, he bounced around the low minor leagues, first in Lafayette, Ind., for an independent league team that eventually folded, and then for another independent team in Bend, Ore., before landing in Tacoma.

He's happy with his job, but his goal always has been to become a major league announcer. Not that he has any regrets about his career path. It's one that has been traveled by even the best announcers. It's the nature of the business.

Hank Greenwald, a superb announcer for the Giants and Yankees for more than 20 years, is retired now, listening to games on satellite radio and the Internet - including those called by his son, Doug, a fast-rising broadcaster for Class AAA Fresno.

Greenwald loves his son's work, but admits to wincing at some of what he hears around the country.

"They probably said the same about me, but I find myself saying, 'Why don't you just shut up?' " Greenwald said with a laugh.

Apparently, the Giants could have hired the sainted Hank Greenwald for the Papa gig and they blew it, due to a continuing feud started by the Giants front office. That's a tremendous shame.

Anyway, the Action 36 broadcast was really interesting and creepy, mostly because the play-by-play broadcaster was Hank Greenwald, longtime Giants announcer and, in fact, the voice of Baseball to me in my youth, growing up within the range of Giants flagship station KNBR.Greenwald retired from the Giants several years back, then wrote a book where he ripped members of the Giants management team and said he didn't like Barry Bonds very much.Is it any wonder than Hank didn't get offered any work when Lon Simmons retired?
    ...
But Hank's still Hank, and the A's decided to put him on the air.Which is great, but Hank is a storyteller and he's doing TV instead of radio for the A's.Doesn't seem right, on two counts. He should be doing Giants radio, not A's TV.Also, Hank didn't really look great - he's really getting up there.
    ...
Hank Greenwald needs to be broadcasting the Giants.
    ...
    Greenwald's a radio guy; Papa's a TV guy.
