Jim Greenlund, assistant manager at United Building Center, Zimmerman, is the president of the new Sherburne County chapter of Habitat for Humanity.
In 2000 and 2001 Greenlund served as president of the Suburban Northwest Builders Association. Several years ago he was on the board of directors of that association when an Ivan Sand instructor asked the association if the students could have some wood left over from a building project to construct houses for wood ducks.
Things grew from that point, said Greenlund, and the Builders Association ended up endorsing the school's grant.
"They (students) started out building houses for wood ducks and now they're building a home for a family," said Greenlund. "That's a pretty exciting jump."
Volunteers build Habitat homes under trained supervision. Individual, corporate, faith groups and other sources provide financial support, materials and time.

Once complete, Greenlund estimated the home will be worth $140,000 to $160,000. The Keener's mortgage will be approximately $50,000. Habitat homes are sold at no profit and no interest is charged on the mortgage. The group is committed to completing the house by Sept. 1.

"It's the first time," Greenlund noted, "that AmeriCorps, a school, a builders association and Habitat have worked together to help the community. It's a very nice tie."

Greenlund is recruiting members for a Habitat board of directors. If interested, call him at 763-856-2355.
