"The one thing about agents who go after designations is that it does say they are committed to their industry," said Roxanne Gottleber, a real estate agent with Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage in Valparaiso.

Gottleber has earned her Accredited Buyer Representative designation and her Graduate of the Realtor Institute designation."By earning designations, and taking the time to do that, it does make a statement that you are committed to your business and to helping your clients."

Gottleber, like Ortosky, would like to see more of her peers make the effort to earn more designations.Such a step would give another boost to the already increasing professionalism of the industry, they say.

"I think that the people coming into this industry today are more educated than they were in the past," Gottleber said.

The Graduate of the Realtor Institute designation, for example, required a three-year commitment from Gottleber and Ortosky.

Gottleber, though, doesn't dispute that open houses have lost much of their importance during the years.

"With the Internet, more and more people are going online to take virtual tours," she said."These are becoming the open houses now.People take the tours, see which homes they like, and then schedule an appointment for those that interest them."

Some buyers, though, insist on holding open houses.For them, local real estate agents had some advice on how best to make an open house a success: make sure the house is as clutter-free and clean as possible.
