Frequent use is one of the strengths of the Canalway Trail system, said Fran Gotcsik, director of programs and policy for Parks & Trails New York.

"What's nice about the Canalway Trail is there's always a lot of people on the trail," Gotcsik said. "That's one of the best deterrents to crime there is."

Gotcsik also pointed to standard rules of the trail, where joggers, bikers and others use it simultaneously. Bikers coming up behind a jogger should alert the jogger, she said, and that's easier to hear without headphones.

What all the projects have in common is the ability to link people to places and contribute to individual health, quality of life, and the environmental and economic health of New York's communities," commented Fran Gotcsik, Parks & Trails New York Director of Programs and Policy.

Frances S. Gotcsik, the director of programs and policy for Parks & Trails New York, said options for a situation such as this include buying the land from the railroad or "rail banking" it.Through the latter option, land could be put to a public use but would be preserved for a possible future return to rail use.

Gotcsik said there has already been a conference call with several Western New York groups interested in preserving the rail path as a public trail.

"If there is not a strong level of support when the railroad announces its intent to abandon the corridor, that is just never going to happen," she said.

Gotcsik said a trail can take 10 years to finish from concept to completion.

Even though it isn't completed, Fran Gotcsik, director of programs and policy for Parks & Trails, said the trail is already busy with cyclists.

At the discussion, businesses will learn to become more "bicycle friendly" and tap into the tourist market opportunity the trail provides. Both the Canal Corp. and Parks & Trails are working on an agreement with the Empire State Bed and Breakfast Association to create a relationship to promote the trail.Putting information online would help draw tourists by allowing them to plan a vacation using the trail.

"It's a great opportunity to do a mapping of other trails, as well as links to other businesses that are bicycle-friendly," Gotcsik said.

We'll offer opportunities for Coalition members to discuss important trail issues and set an action agenda, beginning with a forum at our September trails and greenways conference," says Fran Gotcsik, Parks & Trails New York Director of Programs and Policy.

Trails groups, educational institutions, nature centers, local development agencies, land trusts, historical organizations, and village, town, and county governments from all regions of the state have already joined the Coalition.

"We're hearing from Coalition members about their current trail projects, their biggest challenges, the assistance they would most like from Parks & Trails New York , and the issues that the Coalition should be tackling," adds Gotcsik
