Camping areas along the Jackfish Bay portion of Basswood Lake, where the accident occurred, are so secluded that they are unlikely to be happened upon by passers-by, said Gary Gotchnik, owner of Wilderness Outfitters in Ely.

"Some of our parties said they could see water lifted right off the lake," said Gotchnik, who heard that winds reached 60 or 70 miles per hour.

Moving into uncomfortable conditions, though, can deter people from leaving tents during bad weather, Gotchnik said.
"If it's late at night, most people won't climb out of a tent because it's nice and dry in there," he said.
Gotchnik and Lakner couldn't recall any similar BWCAW fatalities in recent years.
