Smar president Edmundo Gorini is fond of saying the new linking device , called DFI , flattens the system architecture to two levels Ethernet and H1.He is also keen to point out that the DFI is based on IEC and OPC standards , and it also incorporates standard function blocks and flexible I/O.
The long waited promise of interoperability and vendor independence is thus fully realised , says Mr. Gorini.
We have walked a long way to make the DFI.In 1997 we already had several successful commercial fieldbus installations running around the world. We could easily see that H1 fieldbus and Ethernet were two winning technologies.Ethernet was undoubtedly in the minds and hearts of most people. The union of the two technologies would certainly be a good ground for a successful product.

We started designing it in 1997 , says Mr. Gorini. In 1999 the first Alpha and Beta tests were made , and in February 2000 the first commercial installation was done here in Brazil at a Petrobras offshore oil platform. This has become the world's first commercial plant to use Fieldbus Foundation High Speed Ethernet.Today the DFI is installed in several plants around the world. In June 2001 it became the world's first HSE Foundation registered device along with ABB..Smar.
