It was more than two decades between job interviews, but Gregg Gordon apparently hasn't lost his touch.
After spending the last 33 years working in the Salina school district - including the last 23 as Salina South High School athletic director - Gordon announced Thursday he has resigned his position effective immediately.
Gordon has been named athletic director and assistant principal at Buhler High School, a position he will begin on August 1.
"I just felt like I needed a new start," Gordon said."It's a new opportunity awaiting me at Buhler and I'm really looking forward to that."
"I wasn't unhappy at South and would tell people that I've got the greatest job in the world. But all of a sudden along comes another opportunity and I decided why not."
Gordon began his career in education at South prior to the 1974-75 school year, teaching drivers education, health and physical education classes. After 10 years as a teacher, he was named the school's athletic director in 1984 and has filled that position since.
When he learned about the opening at Buhler from a longtime friend and associate, Gordon decided to check into it.
"They told me I was a finalist for the job and to come down for an interview," Gordon said.
...
Actually doing it, Gordon said, particularly when you are satisfied with your current position, was not an easy decision to make.
"When you do a job for so many years and get in that comfort zone, it is so easy to roll from one week, or one year, to the next," he said."But when I went to the actual interview at Buhler, the people there were extremely personable and you could tell it was all about the kids.
"They were all positive, from the superintendent to the principal to the assistant principal to the staff that I talked to.They are supportive of not only athletics, but all activities, and I feel extremely fortunate to be going to another district like that."
Gordon, 56, and his wife Deb will both take new jobs in the Buhler school district.Deb, a teacher at the South functional learning center, will work as a special education teacher at Prosperity Elementary.
When Gordon started at South, the school fielded 15 teams in nine sports, but has since added teams in baseball, softball and both boys and girls soccer.
When Salina South left the I-70 League prior to the 2004-05 school year to join the AVCTL, Gordon was on the committee that drafted the conference's bylaws and league constitution.
...
Buhler is a member of the AVCTL III, and Gordon will continue to deal with many of the athletic directors with whom he's already established a working relationship.
"I feel extremely fortunate to do what I've done the last 33 years," Gordon said."I've had the opportunity to deal with some of the best people in education and athletics. My whole career I've been blessed to work with good, positive people."
Gordon becomes the second high school athletic director in the Salina district to announce his resignation in recent weeks.
