Professor David Gordon, head of the CHMS and dean of the University of Manchester medical school, says that the government may be acting on the assumption that medicine is skewing the distribution of university funds. But he feels this is unfair. Universities currently have the ability to subsidise medicine and they do. But medicine can also subsidise other subjects. The freedom of a university to responsibly discharge its own funding is very important.
