Coach Crescencio Gonzalez said his players were well aware of the school's lack of success against the Sagehens.

"One of the goals our seniors set before the season started was to beat every team at least once before they left here," he said."We beat Redlands and that was a tough one.So this was the last one we had left."

While La Verne has locked up a tournament berth, Gonzalez said the Leos' last two games are pivotal because his team could get the No. 3 seed which means it wouldn't see Redlands in the semifinal.

"We're finally settling down," he said.

"Sometimes you get a lot of good shots and you just don't put them away," La Verne coach Crescencio Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez said his team needs to start playing more aggressively earlier.

"That has been the character of this team.We have always played better in the second half," he said.

"It's good for us because it gives us a chance," Gonzalez said.

Coach Crescencio Gonzalez admits his team was too focused on that win.It will face Cal Lutheran (8-3, 5-1) in a 4 p.m. home match today in the last game of the first round of SCIAC play.

"Our matches against them are always good ones," Gonzalez said.

Crescencio Gonzalez, a former player at Azusa Pacific University and a longtime assistant for the University of La Verne soccer program, is in his seventh season as head coach. Gonzalez worked as an assistant for the men's team for seven seasons before taking over as head coach prior to the 2002 campaign.

Gonzalez has elevated the Leopard program to respectability during his tenure. In 2005, he guided La Verne to a second-place finish, and in 2007 he led ULV to a fourth-place finish and a spot in the inaugural SCIAC Conference Tournament.

Before taking over as head coach, he served as an assistant for the men's and women's team for three seasons. During his playing days, Gonzalez was a defender for APU during the 1984 and '85 seasons. Gonzalez also serves as ULV's assistant athletic director for facilities.
