Tuloso-Midway Superintendent Cornelio Gonzalez, joined by Mayor Henry Garrett, new city education director JoAnn Hooks and other school and elected officials, greeted them with a smile.
...
Are you ready?," Gonzalez asked."The school bus is going to come by to pick you up, and we want you to be ready to go.It's very important you be there every day."
This is the third year teachers and school officials have gone out to families' homes, hoping to excite students and encourage parents to become involved.
"We start the school year, and we start it sending the message out to our community that we appreciate your support, and your support means a lot to us," Gonzalez said.
...
Gonzalez said they also hope to reach any interested members of the community, not just parents, who are willing to be volunteers or mentors.
"Our kids need not just help with reading and math, but also need personal attention sometimes," he said.
