  Bruce Goldman finished up the introductory presentation with a journalist's view of the subject. ,It's very clear to me", he said, "how promising and necessary the research is that Dr. Clarke and Dr. Humphries are doing."According to Mr. Goldman, their research is representative of the careful, "reasoned approach" science takes in pursuit of potential therapies.He went on to say that there is currently a feeling that environmental fixes are superior to changing our genes and to suggest that all sorts of impossible ,Brave New World" scenarios are clouding the importance of what's actually being done.
  
  But he did suggest that gene therapy research is likely to be directed, not only by the discoveries and blind alleys that research is uncovering now in seeking treatments for single-gene disorders, but by the positive attitudes toward ,enhancement' that already exist in our society today.
