It was discovered by Mitchell S. Golbus, MD., Director of Scientific & Clinical Affairs for Applied Imaging. The method allows for the isolation and recognition of fetal nucleated erythrocytes or erythroblasts from a blood sample of a pregnant woman. It is composed of two elements: treating the blood sample with an antibody, or antibody fragment, that will bind specifically to fetal cells; and identifying the bound cells as fetal nucleated erythrocytes or erythroblasts.

Commenting on the patent, Dr. Golbus stated, "The detection of an embryonic hemoglobin is a significant step in the identification and isolation of fetal cells for genetic analysis.Since the maternal cell never contains embryonic hemoglobin, we can study the genetics of this group of nucleated cells with confidence that they are fetal in origin."

Dr. Golbus joined Applied Imaging in October 1996, and is actively involved in product development for the Company. He has been instrumental in enrolling clinical trial sites for fetal cell testing and serving as liaison to these sites.Prior to joining Applied Imaging, Dr. Golbus was professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at the University of California, San Francisco for twenty-five years.
