Ochsner spokeswoman Aimee Goforth said security guards patrol the garage 24 hours a day.But it's not uncommon for vehicles to remain in the 2,100-space garage for days, even weeks.Often, visitors -- and their vehicles -- stay for days while loved ones are being treated.Yet there are hundreds of cars coming and going through the garage every day, Goforth said.

"We patrol the campus, but it's a driving patrol," she said."They don't physically look into every single car.Unless the car has a flat tire, is leaking gas or there is an odor, we don't go and peek into it."

Goforth said the security patrols occur at random times every day.In addition to that, the hospital has more than 150 security cameras and a Sheriff's Office deputy on duty 24 hours a day.

"It's a very safe campus," she said.
