Bill Giorgis, president of Mike's Wrecker Service, a full-range towing company in Saginaw, Mich., described being dispatched by a carrier to an incident "in a municipality that refused to allow us to serve our customer because their preferred [towing company] was there. They hadn't started to work, but they were there and they wanted that guy to get paid.
"I think the reason our customer wanted us is because we provide what I like to think is a high-quality service at a fair price," Giorgis says. "His choice was denied because of whatever agreement that other [towing company] has with that municipality. That's not only an issue for us, but it is an issue for the trucking company as well."
Giorgis says he's seeing more and more communities stepping in to regulate towing - partly because they are cash-strapped.
...
Giorgis gave an example from his recent experience. A customer of his, Praxair, planned to introduce some new products that would bring a large number of trucks into his area. "Their safety people came to our office, met with our personnel and did joint safety training with them. They said, 'We want you to be educated so you can help serve us better.'"
"To me," Giorgis says, "that's the optimal customer-vendor relationship." -

Giorgis and McGann Team Up to Deliver Critical Oil Supply
...
Neither did Bill Giorgis of the Mid-West United Towing Alliance (MUTA) pod nor Bob McGann of the United Towing Alliance (UTA) pod.
...
Giorgis, the second-generation owner of Mike's Wrecker Services Inc. (Saginaw, Michigan) worked with McGann of McGann & Chester (Pittsburgh, PA) to ship a critical supply of specialty engine oil from Pittsburgh to Saginaw on the holiday.
...
1 -- Late in the week prior to Labor Day, Giorgis arranged for a trucking contractor to ship the huge generators for his client, Cummins Bridgeway Power Systems, a FEMA contractor providing portable power systems. While the huge generators didn't fit Giorgis's equipment, "we acted as a broker to find the generator company the right transport guy that was closest and most economical for them," he explained.
2 -- On Labor Day, Giorgis got an urgent call. The problem: the generators were ready to ship from a warehouse in Michigan, but were useless without a specialty engine oil that was sitting at a distribution facility in Pittsburgh.
3 -- "I called [fellow Member] Bob McGann in Pittsburgh," recounted Giorgis, "whom I knew from our meetings.
...
On Labor Day, in Pittsburgh (point A, above), Bob McGann got a call from fellow Member Bill Giorgis in Saginaw, Michigan (point B, avove).
...
Giorgis explained: "By working together with Bob McGann, we cut down the delivery by 12 hours so the customer could get the generators started sooner."
...
"We delivered two generators to Gulfport and Biloxi, Mississippi," Giorgis said."The government used them to power up the 911 [emergency] center, communications towers, and a temporary morgue."
While trucks using northern and eastern approaches were stuck waiting out the storm in Birmingham and Atlanta, Giorgis sent his trucks via a western route that brought them "through the back side into Louisiana" without delay.
