"You'll never get rid of dust mites 100 per cent but you can reduce that level dramatically over time," Giordano says.
Cleaning is crucial where it is usually neglected: under TV sets and lounge suites, on top of light fittings and globes, right around picture frames, on top of cupboards and wood rails, under books on shelves and around cornices.
The homes of allergy sufferers need not be cleaned weekly, says Giordano, but can be left up to a month if the job is done well in the first place.
Dusting should be done with cotton and polyester-blend microfibre cloths, which attract dust.They are available in supermarkets.Giordano says such cloths have the right balance of abrasiveness and softness.He recommends assigning cloths strictly to each room to prevent bacteria being moved around the home.
Giordano recommends natural cleaning fluids made from citrus and for window cleaning, he says a polyester-polyamide cloth will leave minimal streaking, while a mop with a replaceable microfibre pad will pick up dust and help polish floorboards.
