The only US civilian assigned to Cornerstone during this time was Mr. Frank Giordano, who works at the 2nd Naval Construction Brigade as a Civil Logistics Management Specialist. While this is Mr. Giordano's first exercise of this type as a civilian, he is no stranger to military and Seabee life as he is a retired US Navy Civil Engineer Corps reserve officer who brings his specialized experience (many years experience with road-building) to Cornerstone. He has been assigned to J3 and was specifically tasked to lend technical advice in surveying, project evaluation, and correct engineering processes. His efforts were part of the early phase in getting the conditions ready for actual construction. Challenges he faced in his position relate to conveying the right information to the different nations, but much has been overcome because all nations "have come to do the job". In once instance, he and his surveying counterpart were experiencing frustration communicating until they discovered that both could speak Italian! After that discovery, the surveying moved ahead much more smoothly. Mr. Giordano is very impressed with the level of professionalism of the exercise participants and feels that Cornerstone has been a wonderful life experience.
