    Gillies to give free piano concert at Herrick

    Pianist Paul Gillies will perform a free concert at 3 p.m. Sunday in Hayes Auditorium on the lower level of Herrick District Library, 300 S. River Ave., Holland.

    Gillies began his musical training in Okinawa, Japan, at age 12.After three months of study, he gave his first public performance, playing an original composition.Since then, Gillies has appeared on stage frequently in both solo and chamber recitals.

    Gillies received a Bachelor of Music degree in piano from North Carolina School of the Arts in 2001.In 2004, he earned his Master of Music degree from the Manhattan School of Music.He is currently on the faculty at the North Carolina School of the Arts, where he teaches piano literature classes.

    Pianist Paul Gillies , a 2001 graduate of the North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem , will present a recital of works by Bach , Scarletti , Chopin and Beethoven , Sunday , Sept. 30 at 3 p.m. in the auditorium in the North Building of Penick Village in Southern Pines.

    This series of concerts by students from the School of the Arts , UNC-Chapel Hill , Duke and other schools in North Carolina , is now in its 15th year.Designed to bring the best in chamber and solo recital music to the residents of Penick Village by students who are planning professional careers , the series is also open to the general public without charge.Penick Village is located in Southern Pines at the eastern end of Rhode Island Avenue.For further information call 692-0300.
