Mountain Valley Principal Matt Gilbert said he believes the chance for the students to get together is almost a symbol for the greater community.

"With life after high school, it doesn't matter what (school) colors you wear, or where you are from. We have to learn to co-exist," he said.
    ...
Gilbert said the topics explored during the morning were all things young people will have to know.

"This is all the other stuff we can't teach in our curriculum," he said.

Mountain Valley Principal Matt Gilbert is a strong advocate for the program, saying it was very successful in a district where he previously taught.

"This is one of the best programs I've seen from outside a school," he said.

Between now and Sept. 14, Ward will meet with Gilbert, Buckfield High School Principal George Reuter, Dirigo Principal Michael Poulin and Larrabee to try to come up with a plan that would satisfy everyone's concerns.
    ...
Gilbert said part of the reason he proposed the idea was to find a program to serve needs of some students who would have enrolled in his high school's Family and Consumer Science classes. The teacher of that program resigned late, and despite constant advertising, no one with the correct certification has applied.

A couple of board members took issue with introducing a Jobs for Maine Graduates program in place of Family and Consumer Science.

"I have respect for Matt, and (Jobs for Maine Graduates) sounds like a great program, but I can't support it to replace Family and Consumer Science.

Mountain Valley High School Principal Matt Gilbert said he was impressed by the respect shown to the school and the students.

"Anything to do with the film, or if they wanted to talk to the kids, they'd contact us first," Gilbert said.

Gilbert wasn't pleased with the idea at first, but as filming progressed and the film became more of a look at American culture, he became convinced that the documentary was a good thing.

"Some things aren't nice to see, but sometimes there are things you see in the mirror you don't like. But this film gets down to what makes the community. People will like it," he said.
    ...
Gilbert said the film crew was doing a few final shots at the high school on Wednesday.

The speech was followed by a nearly 45-minute-long presentation of diplomas on stage by Principal Matthew Gilbert, Superintendent James Hodgkin, Assistant Principal Christopher Decker and SAD 43 board Chairwoman Linda Westleigh.
    ...
Parents, relatives and friends quickly positioned themselves for snapshots up front, because Gilbert and Hodgkin had each graduate pose between them for a few seconds to accommodate the crowd.
    ...
Shortly afterward, Gilbert presented Louvat's son, Joshua Louvat, with a diploma, to more loud applause.

Gilbert broke away from the schedule for an impromptu remembrance.

As each senior shook his hand, they gave him a homemade fortune cookie wrapped in plastic. Each message read, "Make it a great day or not, the choice is yours."

"That was a very nice touch to get something that personal from the class," he said of the message, the very words he'd announced to them every day this year over the intercom.

"They were fun - frustrating at times, challenging at times - but this class had character," Gilbert said.
    ...
"We're very proud of that," Gilbert added.
