Karen Gibbard has recently graduated with distinction from her studies with Richard Simpson (oboe) and Gail Hennessy (baroque oboe) on the MMus Oboe Performance - Orchestral Training course at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, generously supported by the Humphrey Richardson Taylor Charitable Trust and the Mercers' Company.

In 2007 Karen graduated from the University of Leeds with a first class BMus Honours degree and the top music degree mark in the year. This course entailed a compulsory Erasmus year at the Conservatorio Statale di Musica "E. F. Dall'Abaco" in Verona, Italy. Prior to that, she studied at Trinity College of Music junior department, where she was awarded the Cassal Prize for Woodwind and the David Taylor Memorial Prize.

Karen has performed in a variety of solo, chamber and orchestral settings. These have included solo oboe recitals as part of Leeds International Concert Season, Dartington International Summer School and at St. Mary-at-Hill Church in London, as well as baroque oboe concertos with Essex Baroque Orchestra, the Company of Musicians, Guildhall Baroque Orchestra, and the Ashford Baroque Ensemble. She co-leads and plays oboe in the Kariosa Ensemble's ‘Chamber Tots' concerts and workshops at the Wigmore Hall and is baroque oboist in the Prince and Pauper Consort, which is participating in the Early Music Live! Scheme organised by Brighton Early Music Festival.

Karen's oboe/cor anglais orchestral engagements have included performances with the Guildhall Symphony Orchestra, Sinfonia Cymru, University of Leeds Philharmonia, Guildhall Opera Orchestra, Guildhall Soloist Orchestra, The Rehearsal Orchestra, Adoramus Orchestra, Bartholdy Chamber Orchestra and at the New York Carnegie Hall as a member of the Orchestra of the Teatro Olimpico of Vicenza, Italy. On baroque oboe she has performed with the Gabrieli Players, Essex Baroque Orchestra, Orchestra of the Baroque Armonico Consort, Dartington Baroque Orchestra, Linden Baroque, Leeds Baroque Orchestra, The Creakes International Baroque Sinfonia, Guildhall Baroque Orchestra and the Suffolk Baroque Players.

Karen is now starting out as a freelance musician and plays the oboe, cor anglais, baroque oboe and baroque oboe d'amore in a variety of solo, chamber and orchestral settings, including a recent televised orchestral concert in Poland with the Gabrieli Players. She is a member of the Kariosa Ensemble (flute, oboe, bassoon and piano), through which they have led children's music workshops at the Wigmore Hall as part of the 'Chamber Tots' programme. Also, her early music chamber group, the Prince and Pauper Consort, was recently selected to take part in the Brighton Early Music Festival Live! 2008 scheme. Karen also enjoys teaching the oboe for Richmond Music Trust and now hopes to extend all aspects of her career - in terms of both performance and community/education work.

    Karen Gibbard, baroque oboe

It was during Karen's second year at University that she first laid hands upon a baroque oboe, and this was thanks to Leeds Baroque Orchestra who managed to acquire an instrument (and a chart of fingerings!) and encourage her to take part in the orchestra. Karen's playing has much developed as a result of this valuable experience, as has her curiosity regarding period instruments. Therefore this year she is taking part in the Jeune Orchestre Atlantique course at the Abbaye aux Dames in Saintes, France, which provides her with romantic and classical oboe coaching at regular intervals throughout the year with highly regarded tutors such as Paul Dombrecht and Marcel Ponseele.
