That is a perspective that was shared by Lou George, regional director of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, which sponsored the event.

He said foundation members looked forward to the day when limited controlled hunts could take place for elk, but hunting isn't the only reason they were working to reestablish elk in the state.

"There will only be a handful of permits. The hunt will only be a small aspect of what this is about, but it is a symbol of the success of the program," he said.

These signs, which Lou George of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation said, flash to alert motorists that elk are in the area.

George noted that the signs only flash when a signal from an elk radio collar is within a certain radius, which are put on the elk during the winter trapping season.

"Those flashing lights are triggered and flashing when elk are in the vicinity," George said.
