Wayne Gentry
TODD, N.C. -- Wayne Gentry, 78, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at his residence.He was born in Ashe County, N.C., on Thursday, June 19, 1924, to the late Troy General and Cora Houck Gentry.
In March of 1943, he entered the U.S. Army, serving in the Italian Campaign of World War II.The day after his discharge in 1945, he re-enlisted, serving until 1947.He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Army of Occupation Medal and World War II Victory Medal.
After his return from the military, he took his family to Abingdon, Va., where he and his brothers worked as building contractors and opened the Builder's Supermarket.While in Abingdon, he was active in many civic activities.He continued to be a member of the Abingdon Masonic Lodge 48 AF & AM even after he returned to Ashe County, where he continued to be active in construction.They made their home in the Baldwin Community where he was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church.
