Twenty-seven years ago, Bridget Geiger graduated from Eau Gallie High School, a fine scholar who also served as drum major of the school's band.
Her son, Michael, has marched in her footsteps.
Geiger, who was honored as an all-state, all-county and Tri-State trombone player during his time at Eau Gallie, was one of three drum majors for the Commodores this academic year, the fulfillment of a longstanding ambition.
"I would see them (drum majors) at the football games conducting, and thought that would be a good thing to do.And it was.It was a lot of fun," said Geiger, who has played trombone since seventh grade.
An advanced-placement student who will graduate near the top of his class, he is dual-enrolled at Brevard Community College. The National Honor Society, Beta Club and Latin Club member also is a gold medalist in national Latin competition and has been recognized as "Most Valuable Student"at Eau Gallie by the Melbourne Elks Lodge.
Formerly a competitive youth soccer player, he organized a child identification program for his Eagle Scout project and has donated nearly a gallon of blood to Florida's Blood Centers, a substantial contribution, considering donors must be at minimum 17 years old.
He is busy, but not without a lighter side.Geiger dressed as a lobster for a day during the school's Spirit Week last fall, after which he was named to Eau Gallie's homecoming court.
"Not many people can say they wore a lobster suit to school," he said."It was interesting."
So, he expects, will be his transition from high school to full-time college student at Florida State University in late summer.
"It's exciting," he said.
