According to Brian Geiger , Northern Lehigh School District's director of building and grounds , the entire system was shut down to work on replacing a switch on the well pump. When the work was completed and the system turned back on , the chlorinator was inadvertently not turned back on.

On Friday , one of four tests showed a positive reading for the bacteria.Testing was done again on Monday , but as of this morning , the district did not yet receive the results.Testing is scheduled again for today. For the water boil advisory to be lifted , tests must come back negative for two consecutive days.

"It's going to affect us a lot," said Brian Geiger, Northern Lehigh School District's director of support services and transportation."I'm anticipating longer bus rides for students and there's no way around that."

Geiger said that they are already looking into what other routes the school district can utilize for its buses that normally travel across that bridge on their normal bus runs.

A main concern for the school district is that students will still be able to walk that area of Main Street to get to school. All elementary students south of the school district complex are bused to school, but the secondary students are not.According to Geiger, if there is not a safe walking route for those secondary students who come across that bridge, it will mean busing an additional 200-plus students to and from school each day.

"It would be a nightmare," he said.

Brian Geiger, Northern Lehigh's director of support services, told the board that the Peters Elementary School, located in Washington Township, continues to be under a boil water advisory for its drinking water due to elevated levels of bacteria.

Geiger said that he received a call from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) last Thursday informing him of the problem that was detected from water tests that were taken of the school's well water in mid-February.He didn't give exact numbers in regards to the bacteria level, but said that they were higher than acceptable.

He added that the school does have a water purifying system operating at the school and the elevated bacteria levels were detected in the water before it is filtered through the school's system.Water tests taken in the school, after the water is filtered in the system, do not show the elevated bacteria levels.

"Even so DEP recommended that we issue the boil water advisory for the drinking water," Geiger said, adding that it doesn't affect the dishwashing water in the school's cafeteria and the water in the bathrooms.
