   MARSHFIELD - The body's genetic makeup is like a book, said Melissa Gebhardt, a student of Marshfield Clinic's summer intern program.
   
   If the body's 30,000 genes were words, that book would be about 1.4 million pages long. These genes are composed of base pairs - three billion of them - which are analogous to letters.
   
   If just one letter or base pair is in the wrong place, the entire book goes bad.
   
   That is what happens with genetic diseases, Gebhardt said, explaining the background of her study of multiple sclerosis, as she and four other interns presented the results of 12 weeks in the clinic program, a 41-year-old tradition that trains future generations of physicians and researchers.
   
   Gebhardt, a graduate of University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, plans to continue her education in medicine.
