Chris Gbandi (born April 7, 1979 in Bong Mines, Liberia) is a Liberian-American professional soccer player, who currently plays left back for FK Haugesund.

Gbandi was drafted by the Dallas Burn (now FC Dallas) first overall in the 2002 MLS SuperDraft after a hugely successful career at the University of Connecticut, where he was a finalist for the Hermann Trophy in 1999 and 2001, and a winner in 2000 (he was named First Team All-American during his last two years in college). However, Gbandi missed all of the 2002 season while rehabilitating a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). He returned in the 2003 season, where he registered one goal and two assists after playing 22 games in a disappointing campaign for the Burn. Gbandi played in another 23 games in 2004.

It was speculated that Gbandi might cap for the United States national team, however, in 2004 he accepted an offer from the Liberian national team to compete in the 2006 World Cup Qualifiers, making him ineligible for the US squad.[citation needed]

On February 8, 2008, he completed a transfer to FK Haugesund.[1]

Gbandi Gets Chance of a Lifetime11/2/2004 1:52:51 PM

October 23, 2004 - It's a long way from the soccer fields of Bear Creek Park to Monrovia, Liberia.

When 10-year-old Chris Gbandi arrived in the United States in 1989, it was a carefully calculated plan by his parents to move him out of the war-torn country.

Two years earlier his parents had arrived in the United States, while Chris and his siblings remained in Liberia with relatives and friends.

After playing youth soccer in Houston and leading the University of Connecticut to a national championship while winning the Hermann Award as the nation's top college soccer player, Gbandi was chosen No. 1 in the 2001 superdraft despite a severe knee injury.

Gbandi missed the 2002 season, returning to action in 2003, then having surgery to a damaged ankle at season's end. This year Gbandi appeared in 23 games, starting 20 times at left back.

Recently Liberia has come calling for Gbandi to play in international matches, including World Cup qualifiers.

After turning down numerous requests, Gbandi finally said yes and played in an Oct. 10 World Cup qualifier against Senegal in Monrovia.

"I finally decided to seize the opportunity to play against the world-class players of Senegal," said Gbandi, who holds dual citizenship for Liberia and the United States.
    ...
The country pretty much stopped, with fans lined up on the road," said Gbandi, who started 20 games for the Dallas Burn.

So how did Gbandi feel under such difficult circumstances?

"You go into the game trying to see how you fit in," he said."It is another level, and it forces you up or you will get embarrassed.I came out of there with a lot of confidence, which I hope to build on."

After initially teasing Gbandi about his lack of a Liberian accent, his teammates warmed to him after his performance.

In attendance were many of Gbandi's relatives whom he caught up with later that night after the match.

Gbandi even gave his relatives his $1,000 game fee.

"The whole experience reminded me how fortunate my situation is.Over there people are starving, looking for a place to sleep. The trip made me realize I am lucky," he said.

A handful of men's and women's players from the Houston area were picked in Major League Soccer and Women's United Soccer Association drafts over the weekend.

Leading the way was the University of Connecticut's Chris Gbandi, who was the No. 1 overall pick in Sunday's MLS SuperDraft by the Dallas Burn.

For Gbandi, a 6-0, 180-pound defender from Cypress Falls, being the top pick was a thrill.

"I kind of figured I would be from the way people were talking, but until they call you and you go up there and receive your jersey, you're still nervous," he said.

I think Sigi should go after a guy by the name of Chris Gbandi from UConn (Herman Trophy winner last year).I believe we almost signed him last year too but he went back to finish school.

Anyone...where's our talent gonna come from?
