This time, the HISD community has come above it all in support of Diaz Jr. High Art Teacher, Maricela "Mitch" Garza, who was named the grand prize winner of the Dr. Pepper Sabrosura Art Contest.

This time, the HISD community has come above it all in support of Diaz Jr. High Art Teacher, Maricela "Mitch" Garza, who was named the grand prize winner of the Dr. Pepper Sabrosura Art Contest. Thousands of art pieces were submitted for competition, but only 23 made the semifinals.Out of those 23, only four were selected "Winners Con Sabor," and Garza was named the grand prize winner.With it, she took a monetary prize of $10,000. THE WINNER'S BACKGROUNDGarza is a graduate of Hidalgo High School, now Hidalgo Early College High School.She was raised in the Hidalgo community and has worked in Hidalgo since she graduated from what is now The University of Texas-Pan American.Throughout her career, she has educated over 1,300 students.Some students even come from the same family, but from different generations."What is so rewarding about being an educator is that I get to impact more than just one generation," said Garza."Right now I have children of the people I educated over a decade ago, and it is so exciting to hear my students tell me the stories they share with their parents about my class."Garza has been a middle school art teacher for 16 years and has inspired many students to follow her line of work.

Garza continues to educate middle school art students, and has now begun to expose her artwork to the public.THE NATIONAL CHALLENGE"This is the first time that I publicize my work," Garza explained.

"Since I did not have a lot of time to submit my piece, I inspired myself with the first cultural memories that came to me," Garza said.
