Foss won the contract after competing against 10 other tug companies from Japan, Europe, Russia, Singapore and elsewhere, said Paul Gallagher, Foss Maritime director of sales, marine transportation.
Foss's key to winning the contract was its long experience in leading similar campaigns, as well as the company's familiarity with the challenging conditions found in the North Pacific and Bering Sea.
For decades, Foss hauled barges to communities in Alaska's Aleutian Islands. The company also participated in construction of the North Slope oil fields and the Alaska pipeline.
"Our employees had the experience of working in an Arctic environment, our equipment was suitable for working in that environment and we had been working with the customer," Gallagher said.
