    ...
Charlie Gagne's passion is food - actually, serving food, because Charlie's real passion is caring for people.

Week after week, as the chef at Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church, hundreds of people experience his caring - children in the Weekday Enrichment Program, people attending Wednesday evening programs, and many other groups. In addition, his kitchen regularly caters meals to smaller congregations in Birmingham. (Charlie has been the host for two of the Support Team Network's Leadership Training Conferences, with very high marks on evaluation forms!)

Beyond his responsibilities at the Vestavia Church, Charlie is a member of two Support Teams. One is the Matthew 25:35 Team (named for the verse of scripture, "I was hungry and you fed me.") which each month distributes food to the sick and poor. The other is a team that relates to the Main Isolation Unit at Julia Tutwiler Prison, the unit housing women who are HIV positive. Each month the team leads a worship service for the women, and on special occasions a meal is taken in - the weeks of Thanksgiving and Christmas in 1999, and a barbecue feast in July 2000. (Meals were also taken to the persons on Death Row.) One thing for certain, these women know Charlie cares about them!

Recently, the leader of another Support Team talked with Charlie about the team's Friend, a single, working mother with three children, one of whom is a special needs child.Along with other practical help being offering, meals have been a priority. The Team Leader asked that occasionally, if there were extra food on Wednesday evenings, that the team be allowed to take it to the family.Without hesitation, Charlie went to his computer and scheduled four meals every Wednesday for the next year!

Charlie Gagne's passion is caring for people.
