Blair Gagne, AmeriCorps program director at the Duluth YMCA, would like the program to grow to 150 positions in the next few years.

"Our goal is high," said Blair Gagne, AmeriCorps program director at the Duluth YMCA.

"That's why I'm saying we need to grow this program," said Gagne. The next step is to have a committee go through applications from the agencies to pick the ones that will fit the goal of the program, which is to serve youths in the community. The goal of the program was determined with the help of honor students from the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) Psychology Department who conducted an assessment of area non-profit organizations to find the most important needs in the community. The four areas that were found to be most important focused on the youths in the community: mentoring, tutoring, providing after school programs and volunteering. Gagne said that he would like the program to expand to other areas of service in the future but is taking the process slowly. Next year, it will ask for 80 FTEs, but he said that the increase would probably be gradual."We'll build upon each year," he said.
