At LoPresti School, where Searles' son is in first grade, concessions have been made by Principal Harry Gagliardi to make the boy's classroom peanut-free.Children have also been instructed to wash their hands after lunch and snack, and are encouraged to use a hand sanitizer when they're done eating.
While she's grateful for those actions, Searles said it's still not enough to protect her son and several others at the school who have similar allergies. She said there's no sink in the cafeteria, adding she has done countless hours of research showing that hand sanitizers only smear peanut butter into the skin.
