Doug Gaffney Camp Director The coaching staff is led by Coach Doug Gaffney, Owner/Director of the Camp. Former Athletic Director and basketball coach at Verona High. Doug has over 30 years of coaching experience. He coached two years at Upsala College under head coach Rich Adubato, NY Liberty head coach and former Dallas Mavs head coach. Doug Gaffney was born in Montclair, NJ, and moved to Verona in 1950 where he attended Forest Avenue and H.B. Whitehorne Schools. Doug has been a long-time Verona Ambassador serving as a student athlete, Physical Education Teacher, Assistant Recreation Director, Varsity Basketball Coach, Assistant Baseball Coach, Physical Education Director and Athletic Director.
During his high school career at Verona, Doug earned many honors as a three-sport star in football, basketball and baseball. Overall he earned ten varsity letters. He was the Student Council President in 1960 and as a senior, he was selected by the Men of Essex Organization as the "Most Outstanding Athlete in Essex County." His high school athletic honors include: Baseball (1960) All-State First-Team All-Groups; All-Essex County First-Team; All-Conference First-Team; Baseball Scholarship to University of Connecticut; Basketball (1960) All-State Third-Team; All-Essex County Second-Team; All-Conference First-Team; 1000 Point Scorer (2nd in school history); Football (1960) All-State Third-Team; All-Essex County; All-Metropolitan Honorable Mention; All-Conference First-Team.
Doug attended the University of Connecticut, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1964. He played three sports at the college level. He played varsity football (3 years at quarterback), freshman basketball and varsity baseball (three years). He was captain of the baseball team in 1964. Twice he lead the team in batting and homeruns. During his summers, he was a regular on the East Orange Soverals in the once prestigious Essex County Semi-Pro Baseball League. Doug was invited to several professional baseball tryout camps, but bypassed these opportunities to pursue a career in teaching and coaching.
The first years of Doug's career were spent at schools in Manchester, CT and Orangeburg, NY. However, in 1966, Doug was called upon to teach physical education and coach varsity basketball at Verona. He coached varsity basketball for over 25 years, and accumulated a stellar record of 331 winds and 185 losses, in addition to earning the following team honors: three conference championships, five holiday tournament championships, three state sectional championships (1970, 1981 and 1986). The 1981 season marked the Hillbillies first Suburban Conference Championship win since 1968. Doug was selected Coach of the Year in 1977, 1981 and 1986.
From 1976-1989, Doug served as VHS Athletic Director and Head of Physical Education. During his tenure, the sports program grew from 15 to 29 sports. With both an outstanding and dedicated coaching staff, the teams were constantly at the top of the conference. In addition, Doug was instrumental in the grand opening of the second gym and football/soccer field at Verona High School, and was also very active as an officer in the Essex County Athletic Directors Association.
Doug and his wife, Gayle (a VHS graduate), have been married for over 40 years and have three children: Doug Jr., Kelly and Cari. They have three beautiful granddaughters: Grace, Stephanie, and Brielle. Doug and Gayle currently live in Sea Girt, NJ. -
