  As Director of the initiative on Health Disparities at the American Medical Association (AMA), Dr. Gadon is managing an initiative for overcoming language access barriers in clinical settings, testing a model to improve chronic care for immigrant and other minority patients and developing a series of educational web based programs on controversies at the interface of medicine and public health.where.Prior to coming to the AMA in October 2004, she worked as a community health physician and director of an academic Community Medicine program.
  
  Dr. Gadon has training in both Internal Medicine and Public Health.She is currently affiliated with Northwestern University School of Medicine and the University of Illinois School of Public Health.Her major areas of interest are the integration of medicine and public health in medical education and health services, and community based approaches to disease control, particularly in international settings.She has worked in Vietnam on an outpatient HIV project and with Latin American migrant farmworkers to develop effective case management systems for health promotion.

  The AMA has launched several projects within its Health Disparities Initiative with the goals of increasing physician awareness of health disparities among various racial and ethnic groups, promoting physician behavior change and system change through physician action, increasing workforce diversity, and addressing language access.
  
  "The AMA believes the government should pay for language access," Gadon said, "but we shouldn't let patients languish while payment gets worked out."
