The British Broadcasting Corporation's Tom Carver broke the story -- the world's most expensive painting was missing.A portrait by Vincent van Gogh of Dr Gachet, the physician who treated the artist prior to his suicide, is missing.On May 15, 1990, DATE : [ 05/15/1990 ]The Portrait of Doctor Gachet was sold, within three minutes, for $ 82.5 million at Christie's in New York City setting a record for the most money ever paid for a painting.

However, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Museum of Art told Carver that the museum was unable to trace the painting for its current exhibition, Cézanne to Van Gogh : The Collection of Dr. Gachet which opened to rave reviews and runs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art until August 15th before moving on to Amsterdam this fall.Concerning this portrait, the exhibition catalog simply states present whereabouts unknown..
The spokesman went on to explain that the painting had probably been acquired by someone who wanted the purchase to remain private although he also admitted that there is a possibility that the painting no longer existed.

Rumor has it that The Portrait of Dr. Gachet was discreetly sold, at a loss, by his creditor banks and that the painting is now in a private collection.

Even though van Gogh's letter contents' have often been questioned, I paraphrase from a French translation of that letter, I have done a portrait of Dr. Gachet with a melancholy expression . . . it would be impossible to capture that expression again. And, yet, there are two portraits of Dr. Gachet attributed to van Gogh.
