"Most people in the school are disappointed," said Paul Gabbey, a member of the class of 1981 who is also a social studies teacher at Penfield High School and acting president of the Penfield Education Association, the teachers union."A lot of people worked really hard to make this happen," Gabbey said, including his students who were eligible to vote.

Gabbey said he was confident that parts of the project might find their way to a ballot again next year.

Teachers have been pulling together with students to maintain the integrity of the academic environment, said Paul Gabbey, who teaches an Advanced Placement class on government, politics and economics and is the vice president of the teachers union.

A "bunker mentality" has developed as the school adjusts to the problem."We're making the best of a bad situation," said Gabbey.

Gabbey said some teachers have prepared "backup plans" and continued teaching outside during evacuations while police comb the school for the alleged explosives and evidence.
