    ...
Fuller qualified his HOLT CAT dragster fourth for the third time this season with a run of 4.552 seconds on Friday evening at the Motorplex. He defeated four-time series champion Tony Schumacher in the first round before falling to two-time champion Larry Dixon in round two. In a monster of match-up between the Nos. one and two ranked drivers in the standings entering the Dallas race, Fuller used a starting line advantage in the HOLT CAT rail and never looked back. The Las Vegas racer used Rob Flynn horsepower to clock a run of 4.591 seconds at 323.55 to earn the win light in the left lane. Schumacher's black rail lost traction immediately and slowed to a run of 6.158 at 178.80. The win leapfrogged Fuller over Schumacher in the Countdown to the Championship standings.
    ...
Facing off against Dixon for the fifth time this season, Fuller used a stout .057 of-a-second reaction time, but the HOLT CAT rail overpowered the track and slowed to a run of 5.424 at 215.55.

Fuller is now 2-3 versus Dixon this season.

Needing ride, Fuller starts own team
    ...
ROGERS - It's all up to Rod Fuller now.

At 38, Fuller probably hasn't quite hit his prime as a professional drag racer, but he still found himself without a ride and a sponsor as the 2009 National Hot Rod Association season began in February.

So, one of the more successful Top Fuel drivers on the circuit has decided to do it himself, announcing Friday that he intends to start his own team, Hot Rod Fuller Racing.

Fuller, a Rogers native, plans to get on the track at some point this season and is negotiating for a major sponsor for what he expects to be a modest but hungry race team.

"I know I can amass a team that can win races," Fuller said.

Fuller was the Top Fuel overall runner-up in 2007 and finished sixth overall last year. He figured it was business as usual last December, but his team owner, Houstonbased David Powers Motorsports, decided to shut down and ended its sponsorship ties with Caterpillar.

That left Fuller as the odd man out with other teams already hooked up for 2009.

The season began with one of the more popular Top Fuel drivers out of action. Friends even sent him a cell phone picture that he's saved of a fan wearing a "Hire Rod Fuller" shirt at the Gator Nationals in Gainesville, Fla., last month. It was just the kind of motivation Fuller needed.

"When you're comfortable and doing well, it's hard to make a move like this," Fuller said.
    ...
Fuller also is being backed by local companies like Crossland Construction of Rogers and Transplace, a Lowell-based transportation logistics and technology company.

Others around the area and state have vowed to help as well and perhaps serve as partners as Fuller has spent much of the past few months working his cell phone and attending business meetings. Fuller said starting an NHRA team from scratch commands an operating cost of about $3.5 million.

"When I get back on track, it's going to be because of my ties to Arkansas," said Fuller, who could be ready for the Chicago stop in June if everything works to plan.

There are only three part-time Top Fuel drivers who are operating their own teams against larger and more powerful teams. Fuller said he'll employ about 12 to 15 full-time staff members in the beginning, compared to 100 or more used by the most wealthy teams.

Fuller compared his fledgling organization to a small-market baseball club trying to compete with large-market teams. Just think of Fuller as the Kansas City Royals and five-time defending series champion Tony Shumacher as the New York Yankees.
