Prof Brian Smart
has +20 years experience as a senior academic and researcher based in the UK and abroad, and has consulted with the international petroleum industry and government agencies, bringing analytical capability, creative thinking and innovation to problem solving and capacity building in the fields of science, technology, strategy and higher educational processes.
He has worked in the mining industry and three British universities, most notably being Head of the Institute of Petroleum Engineering at Heriot-Watt University for seven years, and ultimately a Vice Principal with responsibility for the Heriot-Watt University Dubai Campus.

former colleagues in the Rock Mechanics Research Group he
was among the very first to address reservoir-scale geomechanics and demonstrate the application of coupled reservoir stess/permeability modelling.
invented the first rock testing cell capable of applying true triaxial stresses to core plugs, and has developed pragmatic methods for producing the reservoir data required for geomechanical studies.
Retaining Honorary Professorships from Heriot-Watt University and Tomsk Polytechnic University Russia, he is now Rector of Global College Malta.
