Gary Fujimoto , M.D. , the Medical Director of PAMF's Occupational Medicine Department , was recently named Medical Director for Occupational Medicine for the entire Sutter Health system in Northern California.

I'm excited about it , Dr. Fujimoto said. There's a real need to have a network of quality clinics to handle workers compensation cases. And it's quite an honor being asked to do this..

There are 26 existing Sutter Health Occupational Medicine sites in four regions in Northern California , including Alta Bates , Mills Peninsula and California Pacific Medical Center in the Bay Area , as well as medical facilities in Sacramento , Santa Rosa , Modesto , Tracy , Stockton and Placerville.

We have a chance to set the standards for quality of care , he said.So we're setting up policies and procedures that I hope will set a new , high-quality standard of care..

For the cautious, Dr. Fujimoto said, a reasonable step would be to avoid organ meat-such as brains, heart and liver-which is where the disease tends to concentrate.Of course, meat should always be cookedsufficiently before being consumed.

As for foot-and-mouth disease, travel restrictions have nothing to do with a risk of human infection.

"People are losing sight of the fact that this is not a human disease," Dr. Fujimoto said.

In-Depth Medical Advice for Global Travel - [Cached Version]
Published on: 1/1/2003    Last Visited: 3/16/2008

, a book co-authored by Gary Fujimoto, M.D., medical director of PAMF's Travel Medicine Department. The book, recently published in its third edition, contains a wealth of information on preventing and treating illness prior to, during and after international travel.

"The book is designed to walk people through the necessary preparations for global travel, potential diagnoses if you do get sick and appropriate treatment," Dr. Fujimoto said.
    ...
While travelers to rural, undeveloped regions are generally aware of the medical risks, those headed to popular vacation destinations such as the Caribbean and Mexico may not be, Dr. Fujimoto said.Luxury hotels in those countries might look like their American counterparts, but different regional hygiene standards mean people can get travelers' diarrhea or even typhoid fever if they are not careful.

Travelers are at greater risk for these types of illnesses than for severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), despite the public focus on that disease.According to Dr. Fujimoto, SARS is generally contracted only through close contact with an infected patient, and now appears to be contained.Worldwide, about 8,500 SARS cases and 900 deaths were reported from November 2002 through June 2003, compared to 250,000 to 500,000 deaths per year during a flu epidemic, he said.

The Travel Medicine Department offers a Shared Medical Appointment (SMA) on Tuesday evenings for patients with upcoming travel plans.Doctors review each person's itinerary and recommend specific vaccines and safety considerations.Travelers can also receive vaccinations at the appointment. For more information, call the Travel Medicine Department at (650) 853-4725 or visit the department Web site.

Dr. Fujimoto's book is available for purchase online from the publisher, Prairie Smoke Press.
