When AT&T Corp. made a stunning announcement on its breakup into three companies at the end of last September , Mr. Eisuke Fujimoto , Director of MPT's Computer Communications Div. made direct access to AT&T's home page on the Internet using a computer on his desk at MPT.
Mr. Eisuke FujimotoI was impressed by AT&T's use of its Internet Home Page because I could see how AT&T itself explained the breakup into three companies ; operations for computer manufacturing , communications equipment manufacturing and communications services , and what it thinks about the influence of this breakup on society , said Mr. Fujimoto. But , here in Japan , how many companies are using such benefits of the Internet , the impressive worldwide computer network. Why not?.
Having been in his current position for about two years observing Japan's insufficient use of computer communications , Mr. Fujimoto has become keenly aware that there is a need for government to support the efficient and smooth dissemination of computer communications here.
Considering that Japan is a latecomer in this global networking field , we feel that the Japanese government should take the initiative to help promote smooth diffusion of computer communications in this society , he says.

More importantly , Mr. Fujimoto thinks establishment of social environment to accept digitalization is a must , while having closer cooperation with the Cabinet's Advanced Information and Telecommunications Society Promotion Headquarters and other ministries and agencies.
Referring to South Korea's deregulation of EDI , which took effect in 1991 to accept the use of digitized signatures in electronic communications for trade transactions , Mr. Fujimoto stresses the need for swift actions by the Japanese government , including revision of existing regulatory measures.Otherwise we will fall behind the world , he said.
Our imminent task is to take initiatives effectively for promotion of information and communications in this country. For this purpose , we , first of all , should introduce more personal computers in our administrative work. The delay in introduction of PCs into the ministries causes insufficient understanding of the benefits of computer use among government officials , and it also causes a delay in the officials' decision-making in implementation of the information and communications policy..
When asked why he chose to work in MPT , he replied that he wanted to be involved with the nurturing of new high potential businesses. In this sense , he thinks he has been lucky enough to be involved with hot topics so far.
