Pictured here competing on Ohiri Field, senior Michael Fucito should enjoy the playing conditions a bit more in Buenos Aires. In the South American sun, the striker looks to make an impression on his new team during the Sounders’ nine-day trip.
    ...
Like most members of the Harvard senior class, Michael Fucito is currently trying to get a job for next year. But instead of interviews with recruiters, his audition involves playing soccer in Argentina. His potential employers: not Google or Goldman Sachs, but rather, the Seattle Soundersâ€"a Major League Soccer expansion team.

Yesterday, Fucito flew to Buenos Aires with the hopes of impressing the MLS club enough over the nine-day training trip to receive a contract.

Seattle drafted the Westford, Mass. native with their first selection of the fourth round of the MLS SuperDraft (46th overall) on January 15. Fucito became the fourth Crimson player chosen since the MLS draft’s inception in 1996. He was one of two Ivy League players drafted.

Being drafted was no surprise for Fucito, who was named to the NSCAA/Adidas All-America second team for the second year in a row. The striker’s 32 goals and 24 assists put him in fourth in both categories on the Crimson’s all-time list.

And accolades came almost as often as the goals during his Harvard career. Fucito was named Ivy League Rookie of the Year in 2004 for his performance in his freshman season. After missing the 2005 season, Fucito gathered All-Ivy first team honors in all three of the following years. His junior and senior seasons, he was named to the Academic All-Ivy League team. His final season in a Crimson uniform also saw him named a finalist for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award.

Even with this impressive resume, Fucito’s draft position was likely hurt by the fact that he had been unable to participate in the MLS Player Combine just a few days before due to injury.

Fucito could be forgiven had he been slightly disappointed after falling in the draft and then getting selected by an expansion team based across the country.

But Fucito seems to be embracing the idea of playing in Seattle.
    ...
Fucito flew out to Washington last week and has spent the last few days with the team. However, the hamstring tear that kept him out of the combine has also kept him off the field so far. He now hopes to be cleared to play in the three exhibition games that the Sounders have scheduled in Buenos Aires.

Unfortunately for the senior, staying healthy has always been a problem. Despite the enormous impact he did have, injuries plagued his collegiate career.
    ...
The two forwards were named the “Most Exciting Combination†in Division I Men’s Soccer by College Soccer News, and Akpan attributes much of the team’s success to Fucito.

“He’s got two things that are tough to find,†Akpan notes. “He’s left-footed and he’s extremely fast.â€

Fucito was employed in a variety of positions playing for Harvard, and his versatility could prove a very useful asset for the Sounders. Fucito can certainly play up frontâ€"either on his own or just behind a target man like Akpanâ€"and his incredible speed also allows him to be very effective on the left wing.

“He is one of the best guys I’ve seen in one-one-one situations with defenders,†Stamatis says. “He really turns his speed into production.â€

With his natural skills apparent to all, the only question is whether Fucito can stay on the field.

    ...
It took several months, and finishing up at Harvard but Mike Fucito is finally a professional soccer player. In this week alone Sounders FC has now added two left side players in the Harvard product and Costa Rican Leo Gonzalez. Fucito did travel with the team to Argentina where he scored, and has trained for the least three weeks with Seattle Sounders FC.

Fucito was a top side player his last two years at Harvard, and knows something about rivalry as he traveled to Portland, not to mention the whole Red Sox/Yankees or Harvard/Yale things. Mike has teamed up with US National Team member Charlie Davies in youth programs and high school, and wore the armband when both were Seniors.
    ...
Mike is stockier, and likely looks to transition to back up the Left and Right Wings maybe getting time in the CAM and Withdrawn Forward. One coach I talked to at the Combine mentioned his loss due to injury one of the reasons that depth was lost, and Coach Clark in Harvard figured that if healthy Mike would have been drafted in the top two rounds.
    ...
Mike now comes to Seattle ineligible for MLS league play as he starts on the injured list but could see time in the two friendlies and in Open Cup play as MLS Disabled List rules do not apply in those circumstances.

I fully expect that by the end of the season Mike will be a rotational attacking player. All reports are that he has great tactical knowledge, is tenacious in scoring and has solid passing skills.

The official release follows - it is notable that the Sounders still have a single senior roster slot open heading into the July 15-Aug 15 Secondary Window.

Fourth-Round Pick Michael Fucito Signs with Sounders FC RENTON, WASH. â€" The Seattle Sounders FC signed midfielder Michael Fucito, the club’s fourth-round selection in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft out of Harvard, the club announced today. Per Major League Soccer and club policy, terms were not disclosed.

Fucito, who has been diagnosed with sesamoiditis in his right foot, has been placed on the disabled list for all MLS matches through August 15. He will be eligible to play in U.S. Open Cup and friendly matches prior to that date. Fucito has been added to the roster as Senior Development player.

“Fucito adds for us a left-sided player, and we don’t have many left-footed players on our team,†said Sounders FC head coach Sigi Schmid. “He can play wide left and can also play up front. He’s a little bit different player; he’s quick with a low center of gravity, so he’s different from the other forwards we have.â€

Fucito, 23, was taken by Seattle with the 46th pick overall in the draft. He was a second team All-American as a senior, leading the Ivy League in total points and helping Harvard reach the second round of the 2008 NCAA tournament. Fucito finished as the Crimson’s No. 4 career scorer with 32 goals and 24 assists.

Due to injuries, Fucito played in only three preseason games for Seattle, scoring one goal. He rejoined the team for training in early June following his graduation.

So yes, in 2010 we will likely see more of Brown, Fucito, Neagle and Nyassi as all are young talents in need of growth.
