Despite their almost 50-year existence on the North Shore, the North Shore Players community theater group is struggling to stay afloat, said President Marty Fucio during rehearsal Monday for their February production, "Barefoot in the Park."
"Community theater is very active on the North Shore," he said.

Fucio, who plays neighbor Mr. Velasco, during a rehearsal instantly transformed from a quiet man into his character - a funny man who loves excess.

The board of directors chose to produce "Barefoot in the Park" because of its small cast of six people, said Fucio. The board is made up of Fucio and Remon, Matt and Christine Connors, Karynn Mason and Cyndi Cadigan, and it is all volunteer.
...
Despite some recently disappointing audiences, particularly one where Fucio said there were more people on stage than in the crowd, he believes they can survive.
He believes the consistent decline of interest in the theater group is not due to the economy, but rather to new jam-packed lifestyles where people cannot afford to take the time to see or participate in a play or musical.
Fucio is a retired Navy journalist who hadn't participated in theater for about 30 years when he decided to join the North Shore Players.
"They were the second group I contacted and they offered me a part at my first audition," he said.During the day, Fucio is a tour guide at the Salem Maritime National Historic Site. The acting gig does not take up too much of his time and hopes that more people will be encouraged to join, he said.
...
The North Shore Players is a volunteer organization that Fucio says many more people used to participate in.He believes part of the reason for the lack of interest is that the core people involved in the organization of the North Shore Players often leave to go on to different projects.Tony Margalis, who Fucio called a "key player," left to pursue a new job in Florida.
...
They leave and no one can replace them," said Fucio.
He said getting people to take over those positions on the board of directors has been extremely difficult.
"We are looking for everybody," he said, referring to the holes in all aspects of the community theater group. The need for actors and volunteers for the board of directors seems to be greatest, though, said Fucio.
The North Shore Players' next production is the "Music Man" and Fucio is hoping for a huge turnout.
"The 'Music Man' is a kid show," he said.Because there are a lot of child actors needed for the production, lots of parents, grandparents and family members come to see the show.
"It's a money-maker," said Fucio.
