    LEBANON, TENN. - A new surgical procedure available at University Medical Center will provide many colon cancer patients with a better, faster option for treatment than ever before, according to UMC General Surgeon Brent Fruin, MD.

    Dr. Fruin is among the physicians who perform a minimally invasive surgery called laparascopic colectomy that allows for a quicker recovery, a shorter hospital stay, less pain and less scarring than the previous method for treating operable colon cancer.

    "This alternative for colon cancer surgery is a great step forward for our patients," Dr. Fruin said.

    A landmark study related to laparascopic colectomy published in the New England Journal of Medicine, which was supported by the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS), led to the new method's status as an effective alternative to open colectomy for treating curable cancer when performed by an experienced surgeon, according to Dr. Fruin.The study was led by the Clinical Outcomes of Surgical Therapy (COST) Study Group and sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

    Dr. Fruin said the new minimally invasive technique can also be used to treat other colon diseases, like Crohn's and diverticulitis.
