Nick Friedman, left, and Omar Soliman are the owners of College Hunks Hauling Junk, a national chain of trash haulers using the " hunk" image to create name recognition.
    ...
Omar Soliman, 25, and Nick Friedman, 26, two enterprising former high school buddies from Washington, said they founded a business using "hunks" in its name to brand the company rather than promote the physical appearances of its employees.
    ...
Soliman and Friedman fit the bill when they started their company.
    ...
"Clean-cut college students doing dirty work," said Friedman, the company president.

Three years after college, Soliman and Friedman have turned College Hunks Hauling Junk into a $3 million enterprise with franchise locations in some of the nation's largest cities, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Denver, Baltimore and Washington.
    ...
"Tampa kept popping up as a good place for call centers," Friedman added.Friedman and Soliman said they plan to buy local office space large enough to house a centralized call and training center for franchisees in about a year.

In the summer of 2003, Omar Soliman and Nick Friedman were preparing to begin their senior year of college.
    ...
Five years later, Soliman and Friedman have expanded their summer job into a multi-location franchise: College Hunks Hauling Junk.
    ...
Despite the company's rapid success, Friedman says he never envisioned himself as an entrepreneur, figuring he'd end up in an office somewhere following graduation.Although the premise of College Hunks Hauling Junk won first place out of 150 entries in an entrepreneurship program, the two friends at first found other jobs - Soliman in marketing and management and Friedman in finance.
    ...
"We just had this epiphany," says Friedman, now president of College Hunks Hauling Junk."We looked at each other and said, 'Why don't we take the business plan off the shelf and implement it on a full scale?'"

But, Soliman and Friedman didn't want to start an ordinary junk removal company.
    ...
"The whole secret recipe to our success is the combination of a clean, unique, energetic brand that is atypical of a trash hauler or junk removal service," Friedman says.
    ...
Friedman says this not only helps the company live up to its name, but gives those students a chance to learn skills that will serve them in their eventual careers."It is a unique opportunity for them because we treat each truck as if it's its own small business," he says.
    ...
"We're a customer service company first," Friedman says.

Nick Friedman, president of the trash removal company, aims to ink two to three more agreements before year's end.The company is currently considering possibilities in Baltimore, Denver and Raleigh, N.C.Ultimately, the business wants to have a presence in every major metropolitan market.

"I think anywhere there's a disposable income for homeowners, there's going to be stuff accumulating in homes," Friedman said, "whether they're in transition or starting to do home improvements and need to get rid of stuff."

College Hunks grew out of a summer gig in 2003, before Friedman and his childhood friend, Omar Soliman, started their senior years at separate out-of-state colleges.
    ...
"That, of course, gave us more confidence and gave us the concept a lot more credibility in our minds," said Friedman.
    ...
Most of the business' clients are married professional women between 45 and 65 years old, Friedman said."In most cases, the husband is a pack-rat," he said, "and the female is the decision-maker and wants to clear stuff out of the basement and garage" to make space or to prepare for home improvements.

College Hunks is also growing its commercial customers, which include property managers, home remodeling contractors and realtors.

In its first year, sales hit $525,000.By the second year, they had doubled to $1.1 million, Friedman said.
