Heather French focuses on employment litigation and counseling.She represents clients in state and federal courts on matters involving a variety of employment statutes, including the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Family and Medical Leave Act, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act and the Age Discrimination in Employment Act.Ms. French recently represented clients at a bench trial in a wrongful termination case in Maryland and at a jury trial in a sexual harassment case in California.For examples of some of her recent published decisions, see Gwinn v. Food Lion, 195 F. Supp.2d 728 (D. Md. 2002), and McCormick v. Level 3 Communications, Inc., 261 F. Supp.2d 476 (E.D. Va. 2003).
In addition, Ms. French handles disputes involving issues commonly faced by technology companies, including unfair competition, misappropriation of trade secrets, breach of duty of loyalty, and breach of stock option agreements and other employment contracts.She also conducts sexual harassment investigations and anti-harassment training, and counsels clients on a variety of employment issues.In addition, Ms. French recently served as the interim labor and employment counsel for one of her clients, a national retail company with operations in 11 states.
Ms. French is a frequent instructor at seminars for clients and organizations.For example, she recently presented at the Virginia Technology Council (NVTC) HR Fundamentals Program ("Defusing Danger: Violence in the Workplace") and conducted a two-day HR seminar for one of her corporate clients.
Ms. French is the co-chair of the Operations Committee for the HR Leadership Awards of Greater Washington and a member of the Women in Technology Special Interest Group, the Fairfax Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Washington Board of Trade.
Ms. French received her B.A. with distinction in 1993 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and her J.D. in 1996 from the Georgetown University Law Center, where she served as an editor of the Georgetown Journal of Legal Ethics.While in law school, she also served as a member of the Georgetown Moot Court Team, and represented Georgetown in the Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, where she and her team placed second in the United States.
Ms. French is proficient in Dutch and German, having studied in Belgium and worked in Germany, and is a member of the District of Columbia and Virginia Bars.
