Gold Coast Griffith University lecturer, Dr Elizabeth Fredline did her thesis on the issue in 2000.

"Understandably, the negative group primarily included those who lived very close to the event and were therefore most substantially negatively impacted by traffic, noise and congestion," she said.

"However, some residents living very close were also very positive.

"The most positive people were residents who loved motor racing and said while the event may pose some inconvenience, there was a great benefit in being able to view it."

Dr Fredline said the benefits residents felt most strongly were that the Indy makes life on the Gold Coast more interesting.

"It gave an opportunity to show the world we can host an international event. It made many people feel proud of their city," she said.
