Brian Fredline, president of UAW Local 602, which represents workers at the Lansing Delta Township plant, confirmed a Detroit Free Press report that GM now is offering a new round of retirement and buyout packages that include cash payments ranging from $20,000 to $115,000, depending upon eligibility.
    ...
The retroactive bonuses are being offered as a matter of fairness and to encourage more people to consider the buyouts and early retirement offers, Fredline said.

"If they (GM) don't do that, people will keep waiting and waiting for a better offer," Fredline said.

However, Brian Fredline, president of United Auto Workers Local 602, which represents hourly workers at the Delta Township plant, said the strike in India was ongoing as of Wednesday. He wasn't sure which company now is selling GM the part.

"We're getting parts. I don't know if they're coming from India or somewhere else," Fredline said.

    Not always reliable

Fredline said workers in India have been on strike since Sept. 21. While he supports the right of workers in India to organize, Fredline said the parts disruption points to a potential globalization hazard.

"It may be the lesson to learn here is that while outsourcing is the cheapest alternative, it's not always the most reliable alternative," he said.

To those who wonder if the government funded restructuring of GM and Chrysler should have been undertaken or if the taxpayer (us) will ever get back those government loans, I submit the following comment from Brian Fredline, president of UAW's Local 602 chapter in Lansing, Michigan:

"We gave Citgroup hundreds of billions of dollars and AIG hundreds of billions of dollars with no accountability," said Brian Fredline, president of the UAW's Local 602 chapter in Lansing, Mich.

"It's not an 'us against them' relationship anymore," Local UAW President Brian Fredline said.
    ...
Today, Fredline said, the UAW has already made concessions through their national agreement negotiated a year ago.

"The UAW members have not had a raise tied into a wage in about six years," Fredline said. "So, that's one thing we can do to help."

Plus, the UAW also agreed to move their health benefits off of GM's balance sheet to a separate trust fund, which Fredline said saved the company $70 billion.

"It's not the labor contract thats GM's problem right now," he said. "Its the market place and the economy as the whole."

But if things don't turn around, Fredline said, the UAW could negotiate further.

"If our leadership tells us that's the direction we're heading for survival and job security," Fredline said, "the UAW has always supported our leaders and we will in the future."

Fredline said there has been no mention of further negotiations with the UAW and GM.

Local UAW leader Brian Fredline hopes other companies follow Delta Dental's lead.

"These are difficult times for our retirees, and we appreciate the efforts of any of our local businesses that would extend to them discounts and help them afford the basic necessities everyone else does," said Fredline, president of United Auto Workers union Local 602, which represents workers at GM's Lansing Delta Township assembly plant.

Fredline said he didn't know of any other similar programs, but several companies are considering discounts for the retirees.
