She has a PhD in Social Anthropology from Harvard University and has been conducting research in China since 1997, most recently on international adoption from China since 2001. Her work has been funded by the MacArthur Foundation for Peace and Security, the Fulbright Foundation, the Mellon Foundation, the Luce Foundation, and the Wenner-Gren Foundation. She has been teaching Asian Studies and Anthropology in the greater Boston area for the past ten years.
