A student at Stewarts Creek Elementary and member of the North Rutherford Boys & Girls Club, Leya said the essay took about 30 minutes to write.
"I finished my homework early and saw (the contest entry guidelines) on the board and decided to do it," she said, adding that she never really expected to win.
The daughter of Sally and LaMar Franklin, Leya won a home theater system with a six-DVD/CD changer and speakers.
